Ottawa is the capital city of Canada, located on the banks of the Ottawa river which borders with Gatineau, Quebec. The city has a reported population of over 960,000 people making it the fourth largest city in Canada. The city has a diverse population, with over 20% being foreign-born. Filled with rich colonial history, the city boasts many monumental heritage sites from British settlements.
As the capital city of Canada, it is the centre of politics and government. Ottawa hosts Canada’s House of Commons on Parliament Hill, where elected officials and politicians create policies and laws. National headquarters for many federal departments are located in Ottawa, with most of the employment being in government offices. The city is also one of the only places in Canada, that enforces bilingualism in its municipal businesses. They are the largest city in Canada with co-official languages, where people speak English & French fluently and functionally in public discourse. Alongside speaking two languages, Ottawa is known as one of the most educated cities in Canada, with over 50% of the population having a college/university degree. Furthermore, the city boasts the highest per capita concentration of engineers, scientists, and residents with PhDs in Canada. The city is part of a growing life science sector, more specifically in the health sciences. Other economic areas include: business, finance, administration, and sales and service occupations rank high among types of occupation.
Additionally, Ottawa hosts many seasonal activities—such as Winterlude, the largest festival in Canada. Large celebrations happen on Parliament Hill and surrounding areas, such as Canada Day, Bluesfest, Canadian Tulip Festival, Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, Ottawa International Jazz Festival, Fringe Festival and Folk Music Festival, which have grown to become some of the largest festivals in Canada.
