Vancouver is located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, a world-renowned seaport city in Western Canada. Vancouver is also one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada. More than half of Vancouver’s residents are visible ethnic minorities, the majority being Chinese, which make up more than 30% of its population. Vancouver is consistently ranked as one of the Top 5 Worldwide Best Places to Live based on quality of life. The Economist Intelligence Unit recognized Vancouver as the first among ten of the world’s most well-living cities for 5 consecutive years.
Vancouver has the third largest GDP of Canadian cities, with its GDP growth expected to surpass 3.0 percent for the third year in a row. This is above the expected average of the Canadian economy at 1.8 percent. In 2016, Vancouver had record job creation, with 82,900
new jobs, which was close to one-third of all new jobs created nationwide. The majority of Vancouver’s recent economic growth was in its FIRE sector (finance, insurance and real estate) and construction, with significant growth in the retail sector as well.
Vancouver is the sixth Canadian province to have adopted franchise legislation. Canada has the second largest franchise industry in the world, counting for 12% of its GDP and more than 20% of consumer sales. Vancouver was also the first province to recognize real estate brokerages as franchises, after litigation against the government of British Columbia.
Vancouver is classified as a “Global City,” meaning it is an important factor in the global economic system. Over the years, Vancouver has developed a large tech sector: the city has become an innovator in software development, biotechnology, aerospace, video game development, and animation studios.
